Originally cultivated in the West Indies, Grapefruit are believed to be a cross between a large citrus fruit called a Pomelo (Citrus maximus) and the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), although whether this was by a deliberate hybrid experiment or a natural ‘botanical accident’ remains unclear. The Grapefruit tree has dark glossy leaves and beautiful white flowers that blossom into the bittersweet, yellow fruit. Like all citrus species, Grapefruit contain sacs in their peel which are filled with essential oil. When the peel is squeezed via a method known as expression, the essential oil is released.
