May Chang essential oil is bright and zesty with a fizzy sherbet lemon aroma.
Aromatically, May Chang is a middle note essential oil, the main body and balance of a blend, meaning its scent will last a few hours. It blends well with Geranium, Orange or Rose Absolute.
May Chang is native to China and other parts of South East Asia. The name May Chang is an anglicised spelling of the Chinese name meaning "mountain spicy tree". The essential oil is steam distilled from the peppercorn-like fruits that the tropical tree produces, which resemble cubeb seeds (hence its Latin name). The tree also bears pale white or yellow flowers, which are similarly lemon-scented.
May Chang is relatively new to the modern Aromatherapy market but has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. All parts of the plant are used in natural remedies for muscular aches and pains, headaches and digestive problems. The lemon smell comes from the abundance of Aldehydes within the essential oil. Like other Aldehyde-rich oils (e.g., Lemon Tea Tree and Lemongrass), this tree does not bear citrus fruits.
For external use only. May Chang is best avoided in individuals with eczema or highly allergy-prone skin. Do not use undiluted on the skin. Avoid contact with sensitive areas, such as eyes. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use May Chang on children under 12 years old. Consult your healthcare professional before using essential oils during pregnancy and nursing. Best kept in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use within 12 months.
